What an informational site. I have found that so many people are not aware of all the information available for job searching. My job has become the job hunt, however, I am faced with age discrimination. I was wondering how employers knew but it is on your transcript and of course, they can just figure out the number of years you have worked before. I am an early retiree from California Community Colleges. I am attempting to obtain employment out of the field of education and get into some form of PR and/or corporate training. I am preparing a brochure for the job hunt, which I hope will be used by Edd offices, libraries and other places where the unemployed/underemployed seek employment. My belief is that so many do not dress for success nor do they have a positive image, for the interview process. I have included items in my brochure such as appropriate clothing, demeanor and even nail polish and accessories. KUDOS on your site.

My opinion is always one solid and confident follow-up to show interest and reinforce key/relevant strengths. Beyond that and you risk looking desperate or over-focused on this one job. After one solid follow-up, if they like you they will call. Remember, if you are the right solution (person) to their problem (opening), they will be excited to get you back in or make you an offer . . .

I always follow-up with a phone call to any job I apply for within a week to a week and a half maximum. You may have to search for a contact or even run into a "general" HR phone line where you can leave a message, but I do what I can to talk to a live person. In some cases I have found out, for whatever reason, that the person I talked to who was in HR hadn't seen my resume through some glitch in their system, I then email it to them and have gotten in for an interview, thus the real need for follow up. If they say, call back in a week, wait and call back in a week. The one thing you don't want to be is a nuisance.

Keeping contacts from a good interview is a great idea.

The bottom line is that it's a "hurry up and wait hiring and interviewing process" and you have to learn to be patient and be notorious at follow up!

I agree with the various statements about follow-up after the interview, however, often the institutions are so careful about the type of feedback they are willing to give you. Perhaps, many believe you are attempting to challenge their decision and/or lawsuits. There are two things I do, which might prove to be beneficial: to others, they are: a) I request an information appointment, to discuss the department and college culture; b) to shadow someone on campus and volunteer if possible.
