I always follow-up with a phone call to any job I apply for within a week to a week and a half maximum. You may have to search for a contact or even run into a "general" HR phone line where you can leave a message, but I do what I can to talk to a live person. In some cases I have found out, for whatever reason, that the person I talked to who was in HR hadn't seen my resume through some glitch in their system, I then email it to them and have gotten in for an interview, thus the real need for follow up. If they say, call back in a week, wait and call back in a week. The one thing you don't want to be is a nuisance.

Keeping contacts from a good interview is a great idea.

The bottom line is that it's a "hurry up and wait hiring and interviewing process" and you have to learn to be patient and be notorious at follow up!

Networking! Networking and more networking! I answered a few ads and used networking to get my resume to the right person. These automated systems that select key words are a killer. I never did all that well with them. The job I am currently in for example: I applied on line, contacted someone I knew and waited. The inside contact asked the recruiter about me but they hadn't selected my resume, because it didn't come up in their key word search. And the job is an excellent fit for me.

This is good, job hunters need to network.
You could incorporate a section on networking and Linked-in and finding
contacts in the company they are targeting. You have them identifying
the hiring manager. A better method is to identify someone inside the
company who they know or network with who will bring their resume to the hiring manager, and getting the name of the hiring manager from that
person. They could still be tickled for the follow up.

Finding the Target Person won't work with a significant number of online job postings, such as the ones posted by:

1)Third party recruiters
2) Anonymous job postings

From my experience, I could only search for that person if the job ad was placed directly by the hiring company. Then, based on the position I was interested in, I'd try to figure out who the hiring manager might have been by doing an online search.

If anyone has any suggestions on searching for a target person in the instances I've listed above, please share.
Thank you.
